What tools can you use for project roadmaps, and why?

Various tools are there to visualize the timelines, track the progress, and align the teams in the project roadmap. Below is a comparative list of some of the popular tools and possible scenarios, for which they are a good fit, to create and manage project roadmaps.

  • Asana

Asana’s Timeline feature is just great for visualizing where your project stands over time. It allows you to create and choreograph tasks with dependencies and milestones you can track. Asana is quite popular because of its user-friendliness and seamless integrations with tools like Slack and Google Workspace.

  • Jira

Jira is most beneficial for agile teams who work with Scrum or Kanban methods. It is also a great tool to track sprint-in progress and manage backlogs for making teams work towards a common product vision. Due to its integration with agile tools and customizable workflows, this is a powerful tool for software development teams.

  • ProjectManager

ProjectManager is a high-end project management tool. The software was obviously made to take care of the entire lifecycle of a specific assignment. For example, it contains features such as Gantt charts, task tracking, and reporting tools, making it an application ideal for large teams or projects that have very complex dependencies. The tool serves process-oriented teams that need both high-level roadmaps and detailed execution plans.

  • GanttPRO

It is a software tool specifically designed to prepare a Gantt chart, which is a good way to visualize a project roadmap. It is simple and handy for those teams that want to use detail to complete a roadmap on time. It is very good software for teams working on complex project development with multiple tasks and dependencies.

  • Microsoft Project

Microsoft Project is quite an extensive tool in project management, providing highly sophisticated features for scheduling, resource allocation, and project tracking. It is best used for large-scale projects which need extensive planning, resource management, and tracking of time.

Why Use Project Roadmap Tools?

  • Clarity & Alignment: Roadmaps serve as a sort of visual map that helps ensure alignment and effectiveness of teams to achieve key project milestones.
  • Improved Communication: It provides a good understanding of project timelines, dependencies, and deadlines to everyone involved, and is better able to facilitate necessary communication with stakeholders.
  • Flexibility: Changing priorities, adding new tasks, or rescheduling project timelines is effortless as per different tools.
  • Collaboration: Most of these tools allow team members to collaborate with each other in real-time, ensuring that everyone stays well-informed and engaged with project developments.

the best tool is of course the right one for the complexity of your project and the size of your team while also keeping in mind your preferred style of getting things done. By utilizing this type of tool, even the most simple project with a small team up to the largest, most multi-faceted project would be in a position to create and manage an effective project roadmap.

Thanks for sharing this post! I found it very informative. Before we developed our project management dashboard (PMD), we used Asana to manage our projects. I must say, it was incredibly user-friendly and made tracking tasks so much easier for our team.

I especially liked the Timeline feature, it helped us stay organized and plan our tasks with clear dependencies and milestones.

Overall, Asana worked well for us during that time. Now, with our own PMD, we’ve customized features to fit our specific needs even better, but Asana definitely played a great role in setting up our initial workflow.
