From Prompt to Prototype: How AI Is Changing the Design Workflow

The days of an extended design process from initial concept to the first working prototype of a digital product are gone. With the advent of AI, some of that is being transformed today, as the design process is accelerated from a concept to an image faster than ever before.

Now, with a simple prompt, a mood board, visual concept, layout, image, and even early UI ideas can be created. Designers can experiment with multiple concepts in a much shorter time, as they can look into several ideas, rather than spending hours creating every one from scratch.

I don’t believe that AI can replace designers, though. It shifts the focus of designers.

The magic lies in knowing how to ask the right questions, understand which ideas to pursue, and enhance the prompts created by AI with human creativity and design expertise. AI offers ideas, but designers must choose what is usable, has priority, is consistent, accessible, and aligns with the brand.

This also helps to make experimentation simpler. The designer can instantly try out various visual styles, layouts, color directions, or interactions before spending precious time on a final design.

The most intriguing thing for me is the transition from making everything by hand to directing, evaluating, and developing ideas.

While AI can speed up the design process, the final result will still rely heavily on the designer’s ability to think critically and bring an idea to fruition that is meaningful and usable.
