Brand Transparency in the Digital Era : Why Openness Builds Trust

Brand transparency has become non-negotiable. This is due to the nature of our digital age, where information spreads in a split second, making consumers very well-informed.

The truth is, brands and marketing messages had all the ways and means to create an image, and consumer complaints and comments were either controlled and maintained within private communication streams or not even shared at all. All this has changed with digital technologies, and the balance of power between brands and consumers has shifted to the latter.

Transparency has moved past being open about only good stories. It is now about having good stories about values, processing, prices, use of data, and even failure. Brands that admit and accept failure are considered more trustworthy than brands that have no flaws.

Digital consumer behavior emphasizes honesty. Digital consumers are concerned about how goods are manufactured, how their data is treated, and how the actions of brands reconcile with their claimed values. Misalignment of actions and statements can easily result in disparity being revealed on the open platform.

Open brands form stronger connections with their customers by pulling them into their process. They listen deeply, answer freely, and share in a clear voice instead of a marketing voice. This helps turn their customers into brand advocates.

However, it should also be deliberate and regular. Being selectively open, also known as performative transparency, may have negative impacts on credibility. Being authentic and genuine in its actions is what true transparency is about.

Transparent organizations foster trust, resilience, and relevance. In a scenario where the customer is presented with endless choices, trust is the most precious brand attribute.

In the digital era, it is not about keeping nothing hidden. It is about being open, honest, and authentic.
