We have a lot of information at our fingertips. We can find out anything we want to know in a few seconds. Every day we watch videos, read articles, save posts and bookmark videos.
I have been thinking about something.
Are we really learning skills or are we just collecting information?
Knowing something is not the same as being able to do the skill.
You can watch a lot of videos about design, coding, public speaking or photography. But until you try it out, make mistakes and get better, that knowledge is information. It is not a skill.
I think a lot of us get into the habit of learning things without actually doing them. We keep looking for one video or one more tip thinking we will start when we feel ready.. The truth is, we are rarely completely ready.
Real learning starts when we use what we have learned.
Reading about design does not make you a designer. Watching fitness videos does not make you healthier. Asking intelligence for ideas does not make you more creative unless you use those ideas to make something real.
Information helps us figure out what to do. Actually doing things gives us experience.
Artificial intelligence has made learning easier than ever and that is a good thing.. It is still up to us to practice, think carefully and keep getting better. Artificial intelligence can guide us. It cannot get experience for us.
So maybe our goal should not be to collect information.
Maybe our goal should be to use what we already know about the skills.
Because in the end people are not recognized for everything they have learned about the skills.
They are recognized for what they can do with the skills.

This really hit home. There’s such a difference between consuming knowledge and actually building competence, and I think most of us mistake one for the other more often than we’d like to admit. The “one more video before I start” trap is real. I’ve caught myself in it plenty of times.
What stood out most is the line about AI guiding us but not gaining experience for us. That’s such an important distinction as these tools make information even more accessible. The real work still has to happen in doing the messy, imperfect, iterative part that no amount of watching or reading can substitute for.
Thanks for putting this into words. It’s a good reminder to close the tab and go practice instead of bookmarking one more resource
