Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): The Skill Every Marketer Needs Right Now.

SEO isn’t dead. However, there is a younger, more dashing sibling who has taken over the room, and most marketers have not yet even presented themselves.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) refers to the act of trying to make your content rank in Artificial Intelligence-generated answers by applications such as ChatGPT, AI Overviews on Google, Perplexity, and Claude. Whereas traditional SEO will place you on a results page, you will find that the name of your brand is mentioned when a person poses a question to an AI.

And AI is being asked many questions by people. Searches with the beginning word “tell me about.” jumped 70% from 2024 to 2025, while “how do I…” queries recorded an all-time high with a 25 percent year-on-year growth.

How then do you optimize answer engines?

Write in short-form questions and answers. Artificial intelligence is programmed to recognize content that provides a clear response to a particular query. Organize your material in such a way that it has a definite question in one section and answers it in another section. FAQs are good, headers in the form of questions work, and short definitions are effective.

Make use of structured data (schema markup). Google and Microsoft have affirmed that structured data assists the AI features to comprehend and indicate your content, and its utilization equips your content to AI agents. Use the FAQ schema, the How-To schema and the Article schema wherever applicable.

Be mentioned in reputable sources. AI models give weight to content in authoritative and often quoted sources. Having an original research published, getting quoted in an industry publication, and getting backlinks to other respected publications are all better chances of appearing in the list of sources that an AI reads.

Be specific and factual. Indecipherable material is disregarded by human beings and computers alike. Numbers, dates, named sources, and concrete claims are much more apt to get dragged in AI-generated answers.

AEO is not coming to replace SEO; it is another layer. The marketers who develop both skills today will conquer the search landscape of the following five years.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is all about organizing your content in a way that makes it easy for AI models such as ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Claude to extract and quote in direct answers, not only rank on a search engine results page. To optimize for answer engines, you need to write in question-and-answer formats using FAQ sections and headings that reflect actual user queries such as “tell me about” or “how do I,” as AI models prefer direct and short answers. Use structured data such as FAQ, How-To, and Article schema markup to help AI models correctly identify and display your content. Establish authority by getting quotes, links, and citations from reputable sources, as AI models value authoritative and commonly cited sources. Lastly, be specific and factual by using numbers, dates, statistics, and actual source names, as accurate and verifiable information is more likely to be included in AI-generated answers.
