Why Do We Sometimes Understand the Words but Miss the Message?
Why Do We Sometimes Understand the Words but Miss the Message?
Have you ever engaged in a conversation where you thought you understood exactly what was said, only to discover that you completely misunderstood what was being said?
I believe communication is not just about wordings. It involves tone, pace, gestures, facial expressions, the setting can all alter the same sentence.
For example, I could say ‘That’s fine’…the actual words are the same, but your reaction to my words are perceived differently by use. They could be perceived as agreement: For me to act in a certain way, for the action to be acceptable to me it has to reflect agreement on my part., or they could be perceived as disappointment or frustration: You might try to cheat on me, in which case I would surely be disappointed or frustrated, in which case I might say: ‘Are you serious?…’
That‘s why I believe that good communication is not just about using voice well. We should also consider what the other person might be communicating through other means.
At times, simply asking “What do you mean?” or “Did I get you right?” can avoid a much more serious miscommunication.
Is it your opinion that most communication problems occur due to unclear speech, or due to the misinterpretation of what is said?
