How Social Media Quietly Changes the Way We See Ourselves

Social media has become a part of our daily lives. We passively consume photos, achievements, lifestyles, and opinions without realizing how much they affect us. As time goes on, social media does more than influence what we see; it subtly influences how we see ourselves.

Daily, we are exposed to carefully constructed images of other people’s lives. We spot career achievements, trip photos, fitness adventures, and the “loving the moment” moments. These posts can motivate us, but can also set unattainable expectations. We start comparing our day-to-day lives with a highlight reel in another person’s life without realising it.

The effect is usually less pronounced. Additional time to edit a photo. After seeing someone else’s success, a moment of self-doubt. When we feel behind, even though we are doing as well as we can, social media seldom tells the whole story, and our minds can fill in the rest.

This doesn’t imply that social media is bad in itself. It brings people together, disseminates information, and provides a forum for people to share their thoughts and ideas. The challenge is to employ it wisely and not to make it our self-worth.

Maybe the answer isn’t about how social media is changing us, but if we’re aware that we are changing? In this liking and sharing world, with algorithms governing the uncontrollable, self-preservation may be more critical than ever.

It’s all about our values, not feeds after all.
