Predictive vs. Adaptive Planning

1️⃣ Does every project need a plan?

📝 Yes.. but not every projects need the same planning style…

Here are the two approaches that exist today within project management:

Predictive Planning, and Adaptive Planning.

Knowing which one to choose can mean the difference between a project blowing off course and a project staying within its parameters.

2️⃣ What Is Predictive Planning ? Predictive planning describe 📌  First Plan  | 🚀  Later Execute method. ( Called as Waterfall method )

It works best when:

  • Requirements remain unchanged.
  • Clients have exactly knowledge what they want
  • The environment can be predicted.

Examples include activities such as: Construction. Manufacturing.

However, it provides excellent control, documentation, and predictability but may have challenges when changes occur towards the end.

3️⃣ What Is Adaptive Planning ?

It is designed for change and working with uncertainty. It is an adaptive planning method. It is normally done using

Rather than planning everything ahead of time, work occurs in short cycles.

You continuously refine your plan based on additional information and user feedback.

It works best when:

  • Requirements change
  • Innovation is involved
  • User testing is critical

Examples: Software development, Digital products , Startups

It provides speed, adaptability, and learning for adaptive planning but demands excellent communications and stakeholder alignment.

4️⃣ How to Choose the Right Approach

  • Are the requirements stable?
  • How often will changes occur?
  • Is learning more important than control?
  • Do stakeholders expect flexibility or fixed deliverables?

Often, the best approach will be something ‘hybrid’ predictive at a high level and adaptive at an execution level.

Predictive planning leads to certainty. It allows adaptive planning. Excellent project managers know when to use either, because planning style and project needs are more important than planning method.
