Save Your Favorite Reels: Instagram Expands Download Feature Worldwide
In a move that could further fuel the cross-platform sharing of short-form videos, Instagram has announced that it is now allowing all users worldwide to download publicly posted Reels clips. The feature, which was initially rolled out to U.S. users in June, gives users the option to save Reels to their devices for offline viewing or sharing on other platforms.
To download a Reel, users simply need to tap on the three-dot menu in the bottom right corner of the video and select the “Download” option. Downloaded Reels will have an Instagram watermark with the creator’s username displayed prominently, similar to how TikTok watermarks its videos.
Creators have the option to disable downloads for their Reels if they prefer not to have their content easily copied and distributed elsewhere. This can be done through the Reels settings in the Instagram app.
The expansion of the Reels download feature is likely to be welcomed by many Instagram users, as it provides a more convenient way to save their favourite Reels and share them with others. It could also lead to an increase in the cross-posting of reel content to other platforms, such as TikTok and Snapchat.
Overall, the move is a positive one for Instagram, as it makes Reels more shareable and accessible to a wider audience. It is also a sign that Instagram is committed to competing with TikTok in the short-form video space.
