Emotional intelligence at work — Is EQ actually more valuable than IQ in today’s workplace?
Let me paint you a picture. You have two collegues. One is incredibly smart top of their class, knows everything about their field and can solve complex problems in their sleep. The other one is not necessarily the smartest person in the room but they know how to read the people, handle conflict without making it weird, keep the team motivated on tough days and make everyone feel genuinely heard. Now here is the question who do you actually want to work with every day?
That is basically the EQ vs IQ debate in a nutshell. And honestly in today’s workplace emotional intelligence is winning more and more.
IQ gets you in the door. It helps you learn fast, solve problems and handle technical challenges. But EQ emotional intelligence is what keeps you in the room. It is the ability to understand your own emotions, manage them under pressure and read the emotions of the people around you. It is what makes someone a great communicator, a trusted teammate and an effective leader that people actally want to follow.
Research actually backs this up. Studies have shown that EQ is one of the strongest predictors of proffessional success and leadership effectiveness even more so than technical skills or academic intelligence in many cases. Because at the end of the day every workplace is made of people. And working well with people is a skill that no algorithm or qualification can fully replace.
The good news is that unlike IQ which is largely fixed EQ is something, You can actually develop and grow over time with intention and self awareness.
So tell us do you think EQ is more valuable than IQ at work or do you think both are equally important? Drop your thoughts below!
