Branding Vs Marketing : Understanding the Difference

Branding and marketing are sometimes used interchangeably; however, they facilitate two different but complementary objectives for a business because it is important to comprehend the difference between them in order to build a sustainable business entity.

Branding is all about what you are as a corporation. Branding forms the base for what you are as a corporation; therefore, it includes your value system, vision, personality, and promise to customers. Branding is everything which tells customers about you as an entity even before they come in contact with your product or service. Brand voice, culture, customer experience, etc., all make up branding.

On the other hand, marketing concerns itself with ways of promoting what you have to offer. It entails any efforts undertaken through particular strategies in communicating your message. Marketing is therefore usually time bound and tactical in nature, with particular objectives in view.

The main difference is that one is a long-term activity, and the other is often a short term activity. Branding is about creating trust, whereas marketing leverages that trust to get customers.

A strong brand makes marketing more effective. When a brand story resonates clearly in the minds of customers, even without much promotional effort, marketing effectiveness tends to be greater. Without the power of a brand, even effective marketing communications can fail to make any great impact.

In essence, branding and marketing complement each other well. Branding provides both focus and meaning, and marketing helps build on these. Organizations that spend on both branding and marketing build more than just visibility, they build credibility and loyalty as well.
