What’s the best way to avoid burnout in tech?

In tech burnout normally occurs when you assume your brain is an infinite processing unit when it is not. Defining boundaries in reality is the initial step towards its prevention. When you are working remotely, do not allow your desk to be your entire life. It should not be an afterthought but part of your schedule, have a proper shut down routine, get away off the screen and make guilt free downtime. It is not laziness, it is maintenance.

Task balance is another large consideration. You cannot remain in deep problem solving mode 24/7. Alternate heavy work with some light work and alternate workplaces when you can, and sprinkles of breaks that actually refresh you be it an exercise walk, some music, gym, or even idleness. Your brain requires context switches as your apps require.

Lastly, do not attempt to be a one person server to do everything. Request assistance when stuff becomes overwhelming, talk about it when targets are unachievable, and make sure you have people in your team or friends who can remind you that there is life beyond code. The burnout is not about weakness it is about poor management of resources. Race like a marathon, not like a sprint.
