Dark Mode or Light Mode — and Why?

These days dark mode has become very popular. But many users still prefer light mode depending on their eye comfort. In my opinion both have pros and cons. The right choice depends on user needs and preferences.

Let’s see why dark mode is the better version for me.

Dark mode is known as popular mode because it is low luminance space with dark background and light text. It feels more comfortable for the eyes, especially during long hours of screen time.

Let’s see, why I think most users widely use dark mode.,

  • Reduced Eye Strain – Dark mode can reduce eye strain by its darkness background. It reduces contrast and brightness between text and background. That feature makes it easier to use without being uncomfortable for a long time.
  • Reduced Battery Consumption – Mostly dark mode can contribute to save battery usage especially in mobile devices. In dark mode, large parts of the screen are very dark, so those pixels use very little power. This means less energy consumed compared to light mode.
  • Improved Visibility – Dark backgrounds emit less light, so it’s comfortable to the eyes. Especially in low lights or night time settings. Light text on a dark background makes it easier to read, reducing distraction.

So, many apps now use dark mode as well as light mode to be suitable for user experience. For Example,

  • Youtube, WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack.. All these popular apps offer dark mode
  • iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows also provide system wide dark mode themes to adjust automatically.

This flexibility shows you how widely spread dark mode up to now.

I don’t think users not stick to one mode all the time. Sometimes light mode works better for a light environment like outdoor or increased in light.

  • In light environment, light mode give better readability
  • Some users with visual processing issues may face to hard to using dark mode

That’s why  most of the systems provide automatic or system based switching functions.

That’s my take. How about you?
