We’ve spent the last couple of years getting comfortable with Generative AI. We treat it like a super-powered encyclopedia or a creative drafting tool: we give it a prompt, it gives us an answer, and the interaction ends there. But there is a massive shift happening right now that moves AI from being a passive tool to an active participant.

We are entering the era of Agentic AI.

Unlike a chatbot that waits for your next instruction, an Agentic system is designed to have autonomy. You give it a high-level goal like “Plan and book a travel itinerary under $2,000” or “Debug this software release and deploy the fix” and it figures out the steps on its own. It can browse the web, access APIs, write and execute code, and critique its own work to correct errors, all without constant human handholding.

This moves AI from a “Co-Pilot” sitting next to you to a “Co-Worker” that goes off and does a job independently. While the efficiency gains are obvious, this level of autonomy brings up some messy, unresolved questions:

  1. The “Value Alignment” Nightmare: It’s one thing for an AI to write a rude email; it’s another for an autonomous agent to accidentally delete a production database because its goal was to “optimize storage costs.” Teaching an agent to navigate the gray areas of human ethics and trade-offs is infinitely harder than teaching it syntax.
  2. The Accountability Gap: If an autonomous agent negotiates a bad contract or crashes into a financial system, who is liable? The developer who wrote the agent? The user who gave the high-level goal? Or the AI itself (which has no legal standing)?
  3. The New Job Market: This doesn’t just automate tasks; it redesigns roles. We might see a shift where humans become “AI Managers” or “Agent Auditors,” responsible for defining boundaries and reviewing the work of digital subordinates rather than doing the work themselves.

Agentic AI systems are rapidly moving to handle entire workflows rather than just single tasks. What do you see as the single biggest existential risk or societal benefit from AI capable of independent, multi-step action?
