Due to technological advancement, global competition and change in customer expectations in the new millennium, organizations are forced  to continuously improve their business processes. In this context , business process management (BPM) plays a crucial role, it is a discipline that helps plan, monitor, and continuously improve an organization’s processes.

Six Sigma was introduced as a quality management method in the 1990s. It was developed with the aim of reducing errors, increasing the quality of processes, and improving customer satisfaction. It combined characteristics such as Lean and Reengineering to create process changes.

Business process change in the new millennium

The book that best reflected this new approach was called Business Process Management: The Third Wave by Howard Smith and Peter Finger. They proposed that companies combine workflow systems, software applications integration systems, and Internet technologies to create a new type of software application. In essence the new software a Business Process Management System (BPMS) would coordinate the day-to-day activities of both employees and software applications.
