Have you heard about “Conversation Starters”?

This is how you really get someone’s attention!

All of us need to share an idea, get some help, or ask for advice at some point. But many people start conversations the wrong way.

Don’t start like this:

  • “I have an idea.”

  • “Can I talk to you for a minute?”

  • “I need a little advice.”

When you ask like this, the other person feels pressured.
They start thinking: “What is this about? How long will this take? Can I even help with this?”
That’s why they’re more likely to say “no” or just ignore the message.

Instead, try this approach:
Make it easy for the other person to help you. Give them all the information they need upfront to make a decision.

Best formula = Context + Time Needed + Specific Request

Here’s an example:

Wrong way:
“Hi, can I get a little advice from you?”

Right way:
“Hi [Name], I’m thinking about a new project. I’d love to get your thoughts on the marketing side of it. Would you have 5 minutes sometime to chat about it? No worries if you’re busy—just let me know.”

Why this works:

  • There’s context: You’ve explained the topic is “marketing.”

  • They know the time required: It’s just 5 minutes.

  • The request is clear: You’re asking for an opinion.

  • There’s no pressure: Saying “no worries if you’re busy” gives them an easy way to say no.

When you respect someone’s time, you’re much more likely to get the attention and help you need.

I truly appreciate this structured approach.
Clear, respectful, and easy for others to respond.
The formula adds real value to everyday communication.
I’ll be applying this in my outreach going forward,
